Instructor Blogging Instructions

Welcome to the Drama 280c Journal for Fall 2020.

As artists, we all see the world in different ways, but we all incorporate our surroundings into our art.

The objective of this blog is to continually connect you to the artist and lighting designer inside you.  Normally this class is taught in conjunction with Graduate and Undergraduate Lighting Composition which reminds you weekly of your connection to the art and stories we create, while working with the more technical sides of lighting design in this class.  The goal of journaling/blogging weekly with specific prompts is to keep your design brain agile while working on other projects in class.

These blogs also aim to increase your appreciation for light, in your daily life, and expand your vision as an artist.  They will also help develop your eye for light, not just in the theatre, but in your daily life.

In order to more effectively understand how light can alter the perception of the audience; we need to first understand how it alters our perception on a daily basis.

As we move through the quarter, I hope that this blog will help you to discover light in ways that you have not seen before.

Perhaps you will see colors you've never noticed before, you may recognize the angle of a certain light, and you will find ways to articulate how light makes you feel.

To assist with this process, I've created this blog so that you may contribute a short piece each week on an aspect of light that you have noticed throughout your journeys and directly by weekly prompts.

I have also included research images into the prompts as it is something we need to do regularly on shows.

Pay special attention to Blog Topics for even-numbered weeks (also included in the assignment):

  • Week 1: Who are you as a designer or what inspires you to do what you do.
  • Week 2: Romanticism
    • 2 Photos.  One from research and one from your daily life.
  • Week 3: Film Noir

Thank you and Happy Blogging!!
